Vanessa Powell is a dynamic, excited, and innovative portrait and fine art photographer creating imagery that is carefully crafted and artistically styled. Drawing inspriation from themes of nature, family and childhood, Vanessa is an emotional illustrator of the self and of the soulful. Her work cultivates gesture and connection to ones surroundings through moments of realization and self discovery. These are the scaffolds on which her fine art work is constructed and where it is conceived. Throughout her life, Vanessa has pursued the imginative, the experimental, the curious and the unknown. Her whimsical and sometimes dark photography seeks not to tell stories in plain and obvious ways, but instead to reveal the story hiding beneath; both within the photograph and within the connection of the viewer.
Vanessa lives, works and loves in Alaska. She holds a Bachelors in Art History from George Mason University, and a Masters of Education from Western Oregon University. To say Vanessa fiercely embraces a love for lifelong learning and the artistic life would be an understatement. She has studied with many contemporary artists in her quest for learning and growth, and her own work has been shown in galleries throughout the United States as well as in various magazines in the United States and around the world. In 2014, Vanessa was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Rarefied Light Photography Competition. While continuing to work toward her personal and professional goals of artistic development and growth, Vanessa is pursuing portfolio reviews across the United States as she continues to chase her dream of living the creative life.
